The archive spans from 859 CE, when Fatima al-Fihri established al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, to 2017, when actor and musician Riz Ahmed became the first Muslim to win a Primetime Emmy Award for acting. Editor-in-Chief Amina Rashid described the project as a response to a gap she observed in freely available educational resources. “The histories of Muslim pioneers in science, law, literature, and public life are often scattered across academic journals or locked behind paywalls,” Rashid said. “We wanted to build something that a student, a teacher, or a curious reader could access without any barrier.”
The 30 profiles span categories including politics, sports, entertainment, business, medicine, education, science, space, law, literature, architecture, engineering, and military history. Each profile is researched and written to document the specific achievement, the historical context around it, and the circumstances that made the milestone possible or difficult to reach.
Among the figures profiled is physicist Abdus Salam, who became the first Muslim scientist to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1979 for his work on electroweak unification. The site also profiles Zaha Hadid, the Iraqi-British architect who became the first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize, and Fazlur Rahman Khan, the Bangladeshi-American structural engineer whose innovations made the modern glass-and-steel skyscraper possible.
The sports profiles include Hakeem Olajuwon, the first African-born player inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, and Zinedine Zidane, the Algerian-French footballer widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Muhammad Ali, whose career intersected athletic achievement, social protest, and global cultural influence, is profiled across several dimensions of his public life.
In the literary category, Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz is documented as the first Arab writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, which he received in 1988. The political profiles include Benazir Bhutto, who became the first woman to lead a Muslim-majority country when she was elected Prime Minister of Pakistan in 1988. Malala Yousafzai, whose advocacy for girls’ education brought her international recognition and a Nobel Peace Prize, appears in the education category.
Rashid noted that the site’s scope was shaped by the difficulty of the research itself. “For some of these figures, the historical record is rich and well-documented. For others, particularly those from earlier centuries, the team had to piece together accounts from multiple sources to establish the facts accurately,” she said. The site does not rank or compare the figures it profiles, treating each milestone as significant in its own field and era.
The interactive timeline allows readers to navigate the full archive chronologically, from Fatima al-Fihri’s founding of al-Qarawiyyin through the 21st century profiles. The timeline is designed to give users a sense of continuity across centuries and disciplines, rather than presenting the figures as isolated curiosities.
